The tayra is the only species belonging to the genus Eira. This large Mustelid is native to parts of Central and South America. The tayra is a forest dwelling carnivore with a diet consisting mostly of rodents, although, they will occasionally feed on birds, rabbits and small deer. Although the tayra primarily travels on the ground, it is very good climber as well as an excellent swimmer.
